As I'm starting to become a more active member of the Colorado Springs poetry community - Hear Here - I'm beginning to branch out in my writing.

Performance Poetry has been a formidable beast for me to face. I am new to this art, and it takes quite a bit of study to even begin to understand. There is nothing more inspiring, in my opinion, than watching a truly incredible performance poet pour their soul out on stage. As I attend more and more readings, as I am exposed to these poets and their work, I am finding new inspiration for my own writing.

I've always favored cathartic poetry in my own writing. Poetry that releases everything that's been building inside of me. I've always favored poetry that ends in victory and leaves my reader... or listener... or myself... feeling renewed. But, over just the last week, my writing has taken a turn. I've been investing myself in the art a bit more forcefully, doing my best to write within the time constraints of a typical Slam competition, which involves choosing my words much more carefully and doing away with a lot of the fluff that I tend to accumulate in my poems. I am very pleased with the results (though I have to say, I'm still not where I want to be).

In a way, this change in my writing style reminds me of my transition from Bikram to Power yoga. One would think the transition would be easy, but I assure you - whether it's in the studio or on the page - there is still a definite transition period. There is still much room for adaptation, change, growth, and, most importantly, there is still much room to learn.

I suppose I'm writing about this because I foresee for myself a staunch shift in the overall tone and style of my writing on the horizon. I have to say, I am incredibly excited about the possibilities I face in this new medium, and I hope I can do Performance Poetry the justice such an impressive art deserves.
