Part II

"Reading about nature is fine, but if a person walks in the woods and listens carefully, he can learn more than what is in books, for [the woods] speak with the voice of God."

- George Washington Carver

God is in the earth.

We cover his face with cement and brick and steel.

We cut him with roads

and scar him with quarries.

And as we build up, up, up,

we grow more distant from him.

We build boundary after boundary,

and our separation grows,

until we have forgotten God.

Forgotten what God really is -

where God really is.

We imagine a being,

cold and mighty and Other,

but we are wrong.

God is in the earth.

But we've buried the earth

beneath cement and brick and steel.

And buried God below.

Buried God alive.
